The sky was clear this morning, so you left your umbrella at home. By the evening you were standing under a shop awning, soaked. What do you write in your diary? "I should have brought my umbrella." Korean has a small, very natural pattern for this feeling: -(으)ㄹ걸 그랬다. It turns a regret, usually about your own choice, into one short, soft sentence, and it shows up in diaries all the time.

How to form it

Attach it to the stem of an action verb: stem + -(으)ㄹ걸 그랬다. Use ㄹ걸 after a vowel and 을걸 after a consonant.

VerbFormExample
가져오다 (vowel)가져올걸 그랬다우산을 가져올걸 그랬다. — I should have brought my umbrella.
일어나다 (vowel)일어날걸 그랬다아침에 일찍 일어날걸 그랬다. — I should have gotten up early this morning.
먹다 (consonant)먹을걸 그랬다점심을 든든하게 먹을걸 그랬다. — I should have had a proper lunch.
만들다 (ㄹ stem)만들걸 그랬다도시락을 만들걸 그랬다. — I should have made a packed lunch.
듣다 (ㄷ irregular)들을걸 그랬다그 강의를 들을걸 그랬다. — I should have taken that lecture.

Verbs with irregular stems change the way they always do before a vowel: 듣다 becomes 들을걸, and 돕다 becomes 도울걸. The ending is written attached to the stem (할걸, 먹을걸), not as a separate word.

In polite speech, change 그랬다 to 그랬어요: 우산을 가져올걸 그랬어요.

What it means: a gentle "if only"

The pattern says "back then I could have chosen differently, and now I wish I had." There is no blame in it. It is the sigh you give yourself, which is why it fits a diary so well.

  • 친구에게 먼저 연락할걸 그랬다. — I should have contacted my friend first.
  • 버스 대신 지하철을 탈걸 그랬다. — I should have taken the subway instead of the bus.
  • 어제 그 옷을 살걸 그랬다. — I should have bought that outfit yesterday.

To say you wish you had not done something, use -지 말걸 그랬다:

  • 케이크를 그렇게 많이 먹지 말걸 그랬다. — I shouldn't have eaten so much cake.
  • 어젯밤에 늦게까지 게임을 하지 말걸 그랬다. — I shouldn't have played games so late last night.

-지 말걸 그랬다 is the textbook form. 안 + verb (안 먹을걸 그랬다) is also very common in speech.

It works for things you could have chosen

The pattern needs a choice that was really yours. You can also say it about someone else when you wish they had chosen differently (너도 올걸 그랬어, "you should have come too"). That is why it goes naturally with action verbs: 가다, 사다, 말하다, 준비하다. With a plain state or a noun + 이다, it sounds strange, because you could not have chosen it. There is a small exception: a few adjectives that describe how you chose to act can appear, as in 좀 더 친절할걸 그랬다 ("I should have been a bit kinder"). Most state adjectives do not.

It is also mostly about the past. You are looking back at a moment that has already gone, so a future time word does not fit.

-(으)ㄹ걸 그랬다 vs -았/었어야 했는데

Both can translate as "I should have." They feel different.

PatternFeelingExample
-(으)ㄹ걸 그랬다A soft wish, usually about your own choice, with no one to blame일찍 출발할걸 그랬다.
-았/었어야 했는데"That was what was proper or necessary," so it sounds stricter일찍 출발했어야 했는데.

If you missed a train and feel a little sad, -(으)ㄹ걸 그랬다 is the more personal tone. If you were late for a meeting and feel guilty, -았/었어야 했는데 often fits better, and it can sound like self-criticism.

Watch out: the short form has a second meaning

You will hear a shorter version without 그랬다: 우산을 가져올걸! That is a quick "should have!" in speech. But the bare -(으)ㄹ걸 has another job: a guess, as in 지금쯤 도착했을걸 ("they have probably arrived by now"). Which one you mean depends on the context. To keep your diary unambiguous, write the whole -(으)ㄹ걸 그랬다.

Common mistakes

MistakeFixWhy
어제 일찍 잤을걸 그랬다 ✗어제 일찍 잘걸 그랬다 ✓-(으)ㄹ걸 takes the bare stem; 그랬다 already carries the past. (잤을걸 on its own means "probably slept.")
우산을 가져가는 걸 그랬다 ✗우산을 가져갈걸 그랬다 ✓The ending is -(으)ㄹ걸, not -는 걸.
내일 일찍 일어날걸 그랬다 ✗어제 일찍 일어날걸 그랬다 ✓It looks back at the past, so the time word must be past.
먹을 걸 그랬다 △먹을걸 그랬다 ✓Spaced, 걸 looks like 것을 (the thing). -(으)ㄹ걸 is one ending, so attach it.
비가 올걸 그랬다 △우산을 챙길걸 그랬다 ✓Rain is not your choice. Name the action you wish you had taken. Also, 비가 올걸 on its own reads as a guess ("it'll probably rain").

Try it in tonight's entry

Think of a small decision today that went the other way. Finish each line with your own version:

  • 아침에 날씨를 확인할걸 그랬다.
  • 퇴근하고 바로 집에 가지 말걸 그랬다.
  • 친구가 같이 가자고 했을 때 갈걸 그랬다.
  • 카페에서 커피를 두 잔 마시지 말걸 그랬다.

Add one more sentence after it for a full diary beat: what you will do next time. 내일은 우산을 꼭 챙겨야겠다. Regret plus a plan is a very Korean way to close the day. Want to check that your -(으)ㄹ걸 그랬다 sentences sound natural? Write your diary at kdiaryai.com and get instant corrections.
