Korean -길래: "Because I Saw That, I..." in Your Diary
Your friend kept laughing at her phone, so you asked what was so funny. It started to snow, so you grabbed a scarf. A long line was forming outside a shop, so you joined it too. In each case you noticed something, and that made you act. Korean has a casual ending for this, -길래, and it fits diary entries about your day beautifully.
How to form it
Attach it to the stem of a verb or an adjective. For a noun + 이다, use 이길래 (after a vowel, 이 is usually dropped: 친구길래).
| Word type | Form | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Verb | stem + 길래 | 친구가 웃길래 물어봤다. — My friend was laughing, so I asked. |
| Adjective | stem + 길래 | 날씨가 춥길래 목도리를 했다. — It was cold, so I put on a scarf. |
| Noun | 이길래 | 학생이길래 할인해 줬다. — Since she was a student, I gave her a discount. |
| Past | 았/었길래 | 표정이 어두웠길래 먼저 연락했다. — Her expression looked dark, so I contacted her first. |
Unlike -아/어서, the ending can come after a past tense marker, as in 갔길래 or 먹었길래.
What it means: a reason you noticed, and your reaction
-길래 gives a reason, but a specific kind. The first clause is something the speaker saw, heard, or came across, and the main clause is what the speaker did in response. The pattern is "A-길래 B": I noticed A, so I did B.
- 눈이 오길래 목도리를 챙겼다. — It was snowing, so I brought a scarf.
- 동생이 배가 아프다고 하길래 약을 사다 줬다. — My younger sibling said their stomach hurt, so I bought them some medicine.
- 가게 앞에 줄이 서 있길래 나도 서 봤다. — There was a line in front of the shop, so I stood in it too.
- 책상 위에 선물이 놓여 있길래 열어 봤다. — A gift was sitting on the desk, so I opened it.
The first clause is usually about someone else or about the situation around you, and the main clause is usually your own action, often in the past tense. When the reason is your own feeling, such as being hungry, -아/어서 usually sounds more natural: 배가 고파서 밥을 먹었다.
Questions with 뭐길래 and 얼마나 ...길래
-길래 also appears in questions where the speaker is surprised and wonders what the reason could be. It often sounds like "What is it that makes...?"
- 그게 뭐길래 그렇게 좋아해? — What's so special about that thing that you like it so much?
- 얼마나 맛있길래 다들 줄을 서? — How good must it be for everyone to line up?
- 뭘 하길래 그렇게 바빠? — What are you doing that keeps you so busy?
In these questions, the 길래 clause is the reason the speaker is wondering about, and the second clause is what the speaker can actually see: the other person's behavior or a visible result. They are colloquial, so you will hear them mostly in casual speech.
-길래 vs -아/어서 vs -(으)니까
All three can translate as "because," but they work differently.
| Ending | Feeling | Main clause |
|---|---|---|
| -길래 | A reason the speaker observed | Usually the speaker's own reaction. No commands or suggestions. |
| -아/어서 | A neutral cause or explanation | Statements and questions. No commands or suggestions. |
| -(으)니까 | The speaker's reason or judgment | Commands and suggestions are fine. |
비가 오길래 우산을 가져갔다. ✓ (I saw rain, so I took an umbrella.) 비가 오니까 우산을 가져가세요. ✓ (It's raining, so take an umbrella.)
If you want to tell someone what to do, use -(으)니까. There is also -기에, which has the same meaning as -길래 and is the more written form; -길래 is the one you will hear in everyday conversation.
Common mistakes
| Mistake | Fix | Why |
|---|---|---|
| 비가 오길래 우산을 가져가세요 ✗ | 비가 오니까 우산을 가져가세요 ✓ | -길래 does not take a command. Use -(으)니까. |
| 동생이 울길래 달래 주자 ✗ | 동생이 울길래 달래 줬다 ✓ | A suggestion with -자 does not fit. Describe what you did. |
| 학생길래 ✗ | 학생이길래 ✓ | After a noun ending in a consonant, you need 이 before 길래. |
| 친구가 가는길래 ✗ | 친구가 가길래 ✓ | Use the plain stem. Do not add -는 before 길래. |
