Korean -자마자: Say "As Soon As" in Your Diary
-자마자 means the second event follows right away. Formation, tense on the last verb, vs -(으)ㄴ 후에 and -고 나서, plus common traps. Practice at kdiaryai.com.
Some moments in a day happen back to back with no gap: you walk in the door and the phone rings, you wake up and reach for your phone, you eat and feel sleepy. English says "as soon as" or "the moment." Korean has a short ending for it, -자마자, and it makes diary sentences sound quick and vivid.
How to form it
Attach -자마자 directly to the verb stem. There is no 받침 rule to remember: the ending is the same whether the stem is vowel-final or consonant-final.
| Verb | Stem + -자마자 | Example |
|---|---|---|
| 오다 (come) | 오자마자 | 집에 오자마자 샤워했다. — As soon as I got home, I showered. |
| 일어나다 (wake up) | 일어나자마자 | 아침에 일어나자마자 커피를 마셨다. — I drank coffee the moment I woke up. |
| 먹다 (eat) | 먹자마자 | 점심을 먹자마자 졸리기 시작했다. — I started feeling sleepy right after lunch. |
| 걸다 (call) | 걸자마자 | 전화를 걸자마자 친구가 받았다. — My friend picked up the moment I called. |
Verbs ending in ㄹ, like 걸다, simply keep the stem as it is. Nothing changes and nothing is dropped. 하다 verbs work the same way: 도착하다 becomes 도착하자마자, 시작하다 becomes 시작하자마자.
What it means: the second thing follows right away
-자마자 links two events and says the second one came immediately after the first. The pattern is "A-자마자 B": B happened the moment A happened.
- 집에 도착하자마자 비가 오기 시작했다. — As soon as I got home, it started to rain.
- 눈을 뜨자마자 알람이 울렸다. — The alarm rang the moment I opened my eyes.
- 퇴근하자마자 침대에 누웠다. — I lay down on the bed right after leaving work.
The two clauses can have the same subject (I did A, then I did B) or different subjects (I did A, and then something else happened), as in the rain example above.
Tense goes on the last verb, not on -자마자
This is the point learners miss most often. Korean puts the tense at the end of the sentence, and -자마자 does not take a tense ending itself. The past, present, or future is shown by the final verb:
- 집에 오자마자 잤다. — I slept as soon as I came home. (past)
- 집에 오자마자 잘 거예요. — I'll sleep as soon as I get home. (future)
- 집에 오자마자 자요. — I sleep as soon as I get home. (habit)
집에 왔자마자 잤다. ✗ 집에 오자마자 잤다. ✓
The first event is already understood as "just before" the second, so the -았/었- stays off the stem. Even when the whole thing happened yesterday, you write 오자마자, and put 잤다 at the end.
-자마자 vs -(으)ㄴ 후에 vs -고 나서
All three can be translated as "after," but they feel different.
| Pattern | Feeling | Example |
|---|---|---|
| -자마자 | Immediately, with no gap | 밥을 먹자마자 누웠다. — I lay down the moment I finished eating. |
| -(으)ㄴ 후에 | After, with no sense of speed | 밥을 먹은 후에 누웠다. — I lay down after eating. |
| -고 나서 | After finishing the first action | 밥을 먹고 나서 누웠다. — I lay down once I had finished eating. |
When in doubt, ask yourself whether the second action came right away. If yes, -자마자 adds the "right away" feeling. If you only mean the order of events, or there was a clear pause in between, -(으)ㄴ 후에 or -고 나서 is the safer pick.
Use it with verbs, not adjectives
-자마자 describes an action or a change of state, so it goes with verbs. It does not attach to adjectives such as 춥다 (cold) or 예쁘다 (pretty), because an adjective describes a state and not something that happens at a moment.
날씨가 춥자마자 감기에 걸렸다. ✗ 날씨가 추워지자마자 감기에 걸렸다. ✓ — I caught a cold as soon as the weather got cold.
Adding -아/어지다 turns the adjective into "become ...", which is a verb and does happen at a point in time. That makes it a natural fit.
Common mistakes
| Mistake | Fix | Why |
|---|---|---|
| 먹었자마자 ✗ | 먹자마자 ✓ | No tense ending before -자마자. Put the tense on the last verb. |
| 오는자마자 ✗ | 오자마자 ✓ | Attach to the bare stem, with no -는/-(으)ㄴ. |
| 춥자마자 ✗ | 추워지자마자 ✓ | -자마자 goes with verbs. A verb like 추워지다 (become cold) describes a change. |
Try it in tonight's entry
Pick a few moments from today where one thing followed another right away:
- 집에 오자마자 소파에 누웠다.
- 알람을 끄자마자 다시 잠들었다.
- 버스에서 내리자마자 비가 쏟아졌다.
- 친구에게 전화하자마자 약속이 정해졌다.
