Korean Time Expressions: 전, 후, 부터, 까지 (Before, After, Since, Until)

Four Korean time markers with diary examples: 전 (ago), 후 (later), 부터 (since), 까지 (until).

Four Korean time markers cover most of what you need.

전 — Before / Ago

  • 10분 — 10 minutes ago
  • 한 시간 전에 — an hour ago
  • 3일 — 3 days ago

저는 일 년 전에 한국어를 시작했어요. (I started Korean a year ago.)

후 / 뒤 — After / Later

Both mean "after" or "later." 후 is slightly more formal.

  • 10분 — 10 minutes later
  • 수업 후에after class
  • 3일 — 3 days later

한 시간 후에 만나요. (Lets meet in an hour.)

부터 — Since / From

부터 marks the starting point.

  • 아침부터since morning
  • 월요일부터from Monday
  • 작년부터since last year

어제부터 비가 와요. (It has been raining since yesterday.)

까지 — Until / Up To

까지 marks the end point.

  • 저녁까지until evening
  • 금요일까지by Friday

9시까지 도착할게요. (I will arrive by 9.)

Putting It Together

부터 and 까지 pair naturally: 월요일부터 금요일까지 (from Monday to Friday).

Diary prompt: Write one sentence about something that happened 한 시간 전 (an hour ago) and one about a plan 내일까지 (by tomorrow). Two sentences is all it takes.
