Korean Writing Correction: Farmers Market Vocabulary
A common 로 vs 으로 mistake (the ㄹ batchim exception) from a Korean diary entry about a local farmers market, plus 3 smaller polish fixes. Try free at kdiaryai.com.
One of the first grammar rules Korean textbooks teach — and one of the first that gets forgotten under real writing pressure — is that 로/으로 changes shape depending on the final sound of the word before it. Today's diary entry, about a local farmers market, trips on exactly that rule, plus a couple of smaller polish points worth knowing.
The Original Entry
Corrections
Correction 1: 특산물으로 → 특산물로
Written: 특산물으로 야채와 꽃, 과일 등있다 — Correct: 특산물로 야채와 꽃, 과일 등이 있다
This is the classic 로 vs. 으로 trap, and it comes down to one thing: what sound does the word end in?
- If the word ends in a vowel, or in the consonant ㄹ, attach 로.
- If the word ends in any other consonant, attach 으로.
특산물 (specialty product) ends in ㄹ (물), so it needs the shorter form — 특산물로, not 특산물으로. It's easy to forget because ㄹ is a consonant, and most consonant-final words do take 으로 (책으로, 손으로). ㄹ is the one exception written into the rule itself, which is exactly why it's the mistake nearly every learner makes at least once.
(A small companion fix in the same clause: 과일 등있다 needed the subject particle restored — 과일 등이 있다, "there are also fruits, etc.")
특산물로 야채와 꽃, 과일 등이 있다. As specialty products, there are vegetables, flowers, fruit, and more.
Try it in your diary:
- 이 지역은 사과로 유명하다. (This area is famous for its apples.) — not 사과으로
- 학교로 가는 길에 비가 왔다. (It rained on the way to school.) — not 학교으로 (vowel-final also takes 로)
- 손으로 그림을 그렸다. (I drew the picture by hand.) — 손 ends in ㄴ, so 으로 is correct here
A few more polish points
The rest of this entry was clean — just three smaller fixes worth knowing:
- 일반적인 마트 → 일반 마트: "일반적인" (general, in the abstract sense) is too formal for "a regular store." 일반 마트 is the natural, concrete way to say "an ordinary supermarket."
- 쌀등을 팔고 있는 → 쌀 등 팔고 있는: when a sentence already has a long list of items followed by 등 ("etc."), Korean often drops the object particle 을/를 right after 등 — keeping it here made the sentence feel slightly cluttered.
- 매장있다 → 매장을 가지고 있다: "매장있다" isn't a complete existential expression here — you need the object marker and the full verb, 매장을 가지고 있다 ("[we] have a stall"), since 있다 is describing possession of something specific, not just existence in general.
The pattern to remember
Whenever you're about to write (으)로, check the last sound of the word right before it:
| Final sound | Attach | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Vowel | 로 | 학교로 |
| ㄹ | 로 | 특산물로 |
| Any other consonant | 으로 | 손으로 |
ㄹ is the one consonant that breaks the "consonant = 으로" pattern — memorize it as the exception, and the rest of the rule takes care of itself.
