Korean Writing Correction: Hot Weather Vocabulary in Your Diary
Three small mistakes, one big lesson. See how a real learner wrote about Korean heat vocabulary — and what the corrections reveal about natural Korean.
As summer heats up, writing about the weather in Korean is a natural diary topic. Here is a real writing sample with corrections.
The Original Writing
A Korean learner wrote this passage about hot weather vocabulary:
더운 날을 표하는 용어
HUFF POST에서 폭염에 관한 재미있는 가사을 찾았다. "폭염일"이란 최고기온이 35도 이상인 날을 말한다. 최근에는 40도 이상을 기록하는 지점도 많아지고 있기 때문에 새로운 용어가 필하겠다고 한다. 한국어로는 특별히 정해진 용어가 있는지 궁금하다.
Good overall structure — but three errors slipped in.
The Three Corrections
1. 표하는 → 표현하는
When you want to say "express" or "describe," use 표현하다 — not 표하다. The latter sounds unnatural in modern Korean.
- ✗ 더운 날을 표하는 용어
- ✅ 더운 날을 표현하는 용어
Diary tip: 표현하다 is one of the most useful verbs in Korean diary writing. "내 감정을 표현하기 어려웠다" (It was hard to express my feelings.)
2. 가사을 → 기사를
두 가지 실수가 한 단어에. 가사 means "song lyrics" — the intended word was 기사 (article/news story). And 을 should be 를 after a vowel-ending syllable.
- ✗ 재미있는 가사을 찾았다
- ✅ 재미있는 기사를 찾았다
Diary tip: Particle errors (을/를, 이/가) are the most common mistakes. Reading aloud helps — the wrong particle sounds off immediately.
3. 필하겠다 → 필요하겠다
A simple typo — the writer dropped 요 from 필요하다 (to be necessary).
- ✗ 새로운 용어가 필하겠다고 한다
- ✅ 새로운 용어가 필요하겠다고 한다
