Korean Writing Correction: Product Placement in K-Dramas
Fix 짜넣다 vs 끼워 넣다 (the verb for 'working something into' a story), plus a loanword spelling and counter-word polish point.
Some diary entries are about a hobby that turned into a habit. Today's writer started out just watching K-dramas and ended up watching how the ads sneak in — tracking product placement across shows like 보좌관 (Chief of Staff), 청춘기록 (Record of Youth), and SKY 캐슬 (SKY Castle). It's a fun entry, and it also happens to use the same wrong verb three separate times, which makes it a perfect one-lesson case study.
The Original Entry
Corrections
Correction 1: 짜넣다 / 짜놓다 → 끼워 넣다
Written: 스토리 속에 짜넣는 방식 / 차 이야기를 짜넣은 끝에 / 간접광고를 잘 짜놓는 기술 Correct: 스토리 속에 끼워 넣는 방식 / 차 이야기를 끼워 넣은 끝에 / 간접광고를 잘 끼워 넣는 기술
This is the correction worth remembering, because the writer reached for the same word three times in one entry — which usually means it's a genuine habit, not a slip.
짜다 means "to devise" or "to put together from scratch" — you use it for building something whole out of its parts: 계획을 짜다 (put together a plan), 일정을 짜다 (work out a schedule), 각본을 짜다 (construct a script). It implies the whole structure is your creation.
끼우다 means "to fit into a gap that already exists" — and 끼워 넣다 ("insert" + "put in") is the natural verb for taking something and working it into a structure someone else already built. That's exactly what product placement is: the drama's story already exists, and the product gets fit into it afterward. The writer's own topic — ads sneaking into an already-written story — is describing 끼워 넣다, not 짜다.
Try it in your diary:
- 광고주가 요청한 장면을 대본에 끼워 넣었다. (They worked the sponsor's requested scene into the script.)
- 이번 주 일정을 다시 짰다. (I put together this week's schedule again.) — building a whole schedule, so 짜다
- 사진 몇 장을 발표 자료에 끼워 넣었다. (I inserted a few photos into the presentation.) — fitting something into an existing whole, so 끼워 넣다
A few more polish points
- 마니아 → 매니아: The English "-mania" loanword looks like it should transliterate to 마니아, but the dictionary-standard Korean spelling is 매니아. It's one of those loanwords where the intuitive phonetic guess and the accepted spelling don't quite line up — worth memorizing rather than sounding out.
- 화에 → 회에: "여러 차례 화에 걸려" mixes two counters that don't pair together. 차례 ("times/occasions") bonds specifically with 회 as its counting word — "여러 회에 걸쳐" ("over several occasions"). 화 is reserved for numbering drama episodes directly (3화, 4화), without 차례 in front of it. Once you've written 차례, the word that has to follow is 회, not 화.
- 재미있냐하면 → 재미있느냐하면: 있다/없다-adjectives (like 재미있다) conjugate like verbs in this pattern and take -느냐, not the casual -냐 shortcut. In relaxed speech 있냐 is completely normal, but in written, explanatory prose like this diary, 있느냐 is the form that matches the register.
The pattern to remember
Before reaching for a "make/put together" verb in Korean, ask whether you're building the whole thing or fitting something into a whole that's already there:
- Constructing something from its parts → 짜다 (계획을 짜다, 일정을 짜다)
- Working something into an existing structure → 끼워 넣다 (장면을 끼워 넣다, 대사를 끼워 넣다)
Product placement is the second kind, every time — the ad didn't design the drama, it got inserted into one.
