Korean Writing Correction: The History of London Zoo

Fix 개설 vs 개장 vs 개관 (three ways to say 'open' in Korean), plus tense and word-choice polish points.

Some diary entries are personal, some are practical, and some are just a little essay about something the writer read once and found interesting. Today's entry is the third kind — a short piece on the history of zoos, built around London Zoo. It's a great example of a very common Korean writing trap: picking the almost-right verb for a specific, formal action instead of the one Koreans actually use.

The Original Entry

Corrections

Correction 1: 개설된 → 개장한 (and 개설 후 → 개장 후)

Written: 영국 런던에 개설된 '런던 동물원' — Correct: 영국 런던에 개장한 '런던 동물원'

This is the correction worth remembering, because it's not a grammar rule — it's a collocation, the kind of word-pairing native speakers pick up without ever being taught a rule for it.

Korean has several verbs that all translate to English "open" or "establish," but they attach to different kinds of things:

VerbUsed forExample
개장(하다)Places you physically enter and walk around — zoos, parks, pools, beaches동물원이 개장하다, 해수욕장이 개장하다
개관(하다)Buildings with a formal "opening," especially cultural ones — museums, libraries, theaters박물관이 개관하다, 도서관이 개관하다
개설(하다)Abstract things you set up or offer — accounts, courses, services, bank branches계좌를 개설하다, 강좌를 개설하다

A zoo is a physical place with gates and opening hours, so it takes 개장 — not 개설, which sounds like you're describing a zoo the way you'd describe opening a bank account. The same swap applies down the sentence: 개설 후 becomes 개장 후, for the same reason.

Try it in your diary:

  • 우리 동네 수영장이 어제 개장했다. (Our neighborhood pool opened yesterday.)
  • 새로 생긴 미술관이 다음 달에 개관한다. (The new art museum opens next month.) — a building, so 개관, not 개장
  • 온라인으로 계좌를 개설했다. (I opened an account online.) — abstract, so 개설, not 개장

A few more polish points

  • 어떤 기회에 → 우연한 기회에: "어떤 기회에" literally means "at some opportunity," but it reads as vague and slightly awkward as an opener. 우연한 기회에 ("by some chance," "as it happened") is the natural way Koreans start a story about stumbling onto something — it signals "this wasn't planned" right away.
  • 이집트부터 → 이집트 시대부터: when you're naming a historical period as a starting point, Korean usually needs 시대 ("era/period") attached — 이집트부터 alone reads like "from Egypt [the place]," not "from the era of Egypt." Adding 시대 removes the ambiguity.
  • 키우던 → 키웠던: -던 marks an action as ongoing or habitual from a past vantage point ("used to be raising"), while -았/었던 marks it as a completed past fact ("had raised"). Since the sentence is stating a historical fact — nobles collected and raised animals, full stop — the completed form 키웠던 fits better than the retrospective-continuous 키우던.
  • 하고 있는 → 한다는: "나쁜 짓을 하고 있는 느낌" (the feeling that you are currently doing something bad) uses the progressive form where Korean would normally just state the idea plainly — 나쁜 짓을 한다는 느낌 ("the feeling that you're doing something bad"). When you're describing a general feeling or impression rather than an action in progress, the plain form usually sounds more natural than -고 있다.

The pattern to remember

Before you write "open" in Korean, ask what kind of noun is opening:

  • A place you walk into → 개장
  • A building with a cultural opening ceremony → 개관
  • An account, course, or service → 개설

Picking the wrong one won't confuse a reader, but it's exactly the kind of small mismatch that marks writing as translated rather than native — and it's an easy one to fix once you know the three lanes exist.
