Korean Writing Correction: Two Particle Mistakes That Quietly Ruin Your Writing
이/가 subject markers and 에 vs 에게: two particle errors hiding in a real Korean writing sample, corrected and explained.
Particles are the backbone of Korean sentences. This real sample shows two common errors: a missing subject marker and the wrong particle for a person.
The Original Writing
A learner wrote about an inconvenient daily situation:
학교에 결석을 연락하는 방법
SNS에 자주 오르는 화제 중에 하나 궁금한 것 있다. 자녀 학교에 결석 연락을 할 때 꼭 아침 일정 시간 대에 전화로 알려야 한다는 것이다. 요즘 같은 시대에 전화야 된다는 것은 이해가 안 간다.
대신에 전화 말고 근처에 사는 친구에 연락노트를 맡겨야 한다고 한다. 학교 시스템이야말로 시대에 뒤떨어지고 있지 않을까 싶다.
The writing flows naturally. But two particle errors are hiding inside.
The Three Corrections
1. 궁금한 것 있다 → 궁금한 것이 있다
The subject marker 이/가 was dropped after 것. Korean verbs 있다 and 없다 almost always need a subject marker before them.
- ✗ 궁금한 것 있다
- ✓ 궁금한 것이 있다
Diary tip: This pattern appears constantly. “할 일이 있다” (I have things to do), “먹고 싶은 것이 있다” (There is something I want to eat).
2. 친구에 → 친구에게
This is one of the clearest rules in Korean: when something is directed toward a person or living being, use 에게 (or 한테 in speech). The particle 에 is for places and inanimate objects.
- ✗ 친구에 연락노트를 맡겨야
- ✓ 친구에게 연락노트를 맡겨야
Diary tip: Any time you send, give, or hand something to someone, use 에게.
친구에게 문자를 보냈다. (I sent a text to my friend.) 선생님에게 숙제를 냈다. (I handed homework to my teacher.)
3. 뒤떨어지고 있지 않을까 → 뒤떨어져 있는게 아닐까
Both mean "isn't it falling behind?" but the corrected version is how native speakers naturally express this.
- ✗ 시대에 뒤떨어지고 있지 않을까
- ✓ 시대에 뒤떨어져 있는게 아닐까
Diary tip: For gentle suspicion or "I wonder if...", ~는게 아닐까 sounds more natural than ~지 않을까 in many contexts.
