Korean Writing Correction: Headaches on Rainy Days

3 corrections from a Korean diary entry about rainy-season headaches, using the transitive vs. intransitive verb ending pattern. Try free at kdiaryai.com.

If you keep a Korean diary long enough, you'll eventually write about the weather — and one pattern trips up learners more than almost anything else: knowing when a Sino-Korean verb needs -하다 (transitive, "to do/make X happen") versus -되다 (intransitive, "X happens/becomes"). This lesson is built entirely around that one distinction.

The diary entry explains why barometric pressure changes cause headaches (기압의 변화로 인한 두통) — a topic that fits naturally into a rainy-season or migraine diary entry.

The Original Entry

Corrections

Three sentences in this entry make the exact same mistake, so once you see the pattern once, you'll catch it everywhere.

Correction 1: 시작하면 → 시작되면

Written: 장마철이 시작하면 — Correct: 장마철이 시작되면

시작하다 is transitive — it needs someone or something doing the starting: 수업을 시작하다 (to start class). But here, 장마철 (rainy season) isn't starting anything — it arrives on its own. When the subject is the thing that begins (not the one causing the beginning), Korean wants the intransitive 시작되다.

장마철이 시작되면 두통으로 고생하는 사람들이 많다고 한다. Once the rainy season begins, many people suffer from headaches.

Try it in your diary:

  • 수업이 곧 시작된다. (Class is about to begin.) — not 시작한다
  • 새 학기가 시작되면 바빠질 것 같다. (Once the new semester starts, I think I'll get busy.)

Correction 2: 수축해서 → 수축되어

Written: 혈관이 수축해서 — Correct: 혈관이 수축되어

Same logic, different verb. 수축하다 would mean the blood vessels are actively contracting something else. But blood vessels themselves are the thing getting narrower — that's a change happening to the subject, which calls for 수축되다.

교감 신경이 과민하게 반응해서 혈관이 수축되어 혈액의 흐름이 나빠진다. The sympathetic nerves overreact, the blood vessels constrict, and blood flow worsens.

Try it in your diary:

  • 추운 날씨에 손이 수축되는 느낌이 들었다. (In the cold weather, my hands felt like they were tightening up.)
  • 근육이 수축되면서 통증이 생겼다. (As the muscle contracted, pain set in.)

Correction 3: 악화하여 → 악화되어

Written: 순환이 악화하여 — Correct: 순환이 악화되어

악화되다 ("to worsen," "to deteriorate") almost always shows up in its passive/intransitive form, because things rarely "worsen" on purpose — a condition just gets worse. 악화하다 exists but sounds like an agent is deliberately making something worse, which is almost never what a diary entry means.

림프액의 순환이 악화되어 기압의 변화에 민감해진다. As lymphatic circulation worsens, I become more sensitive to pressure changes.

Try it in your diary:

  • 요즘 컨디션이 점점 악화되고 있다. (My condition has been getting worse lately.)
  • 비 오는 날에는 증상이 악화된다. (My symptoms get worse on rainy days.)

The pattern to remember

When a Sino-Korean noun pairs with both -하다 and -되다, ask: is the subject causing the action, or experiencing it?

Subject causes itSubject experiences it
시작하다 (to start something)시작되다 (to begin)
수축하다 (to contract something)수축되다 (to become contracted)
악화하다 (to worsen something)악화되다 (to get worse)

Diary writing is usually about things happening to you — the weather, your body, your mood — so -되다 is right far more often than learners expect.

The Corrected Entry
