Korean Writing Correction: This Year's Heatwave
A quotation particle, a connector nuance, a redundant word, a natural compound verb, and a typo, fixed in a diary entry about a summer heatwave forecast.
Writing about the weather is one of the easiest ways to start a Korean diary entry — but it also hides some sneaky mistakes: a quotation particle that changes depending on the sentence ending, a connector that shifts the meaning from "every time" to "because I did," and one very common typo. This lesson looks at a real student's diary entry describing a weather forecast for a hot summer, and fixes 5 issues along the way.

Corrections
1. "더워지겠다"는 → "더워지겠다"라는 — the quotation particle changes with the sentence ending
When you quote a full sentence that ends in -다 and then describe it as "the saying that..." or "the news that...", Korean uses 라는 after the quote, not a bare 는. Dropping the 라 is one of the most common quoting mistakes, because in casual speech people often skip it — but in writing it reads as unfinished.

| "올 여름은 더워지겠다"는 소리 | "올 여름은 더워지겠다"라는 소리 |
Diary tip: 친구가 "내일 비 온다"라는 말을 했는데 결국 맑았다.
2. 듣다 보면 → 듣다 보니 — "every time I hear it" vs. "having heard it so much"
듣다 보면 describes a general, repeatable condition ("whenever/if I keep hearing it"). 듣다 보니 describes a specific result that already happened because of repeated hearing ("having heard it so much, now I..."). The sentence is describing a real, accumulated skepticism from past experience — a result, not a hypothetical — so 보니 is the natural choice.

Diary tip: 매일 아침 뉴스를 듣다 보니 이제는 날씨 용어에 익숙해졌다.
3. 둘이 다 동시에 → 둘이 동시에 — a redundant "다"
둘이 already implies "both of them," so adding 다 ("all/both") right before 동시에 ("at the same time") repeats the same meaning twice. Native writers drop the extra 다 here — it doesn't add information, it just clutters the sentence.

| 둘이 다 동시에 확장돼서 | 둘이 동시에 확장돼서 |
Diary tip: 둘이 동시에 도착해서 깜짝 놀랐다.
4. 흘러들을 수도 → 흘러 들어올 수도 — the natural compound verb for air/water "flowing in"
흘러들다 isn't the phrasing Koreans reach for when describing something like warm air moving into an area over time. The natural compound is 흘러 들어오다 (literally "flow and come in"), used for air, water, or even light gradually entering a space.

| 따뜻한 공기가 흘러들을 수도 있어서 | 따뜻한 공기가 흘러 들어올 수도 있어서 |
Diary tip: 창문을 여니 시원한 바람이 방 안으로 흘러 들어왔다.
5. 겉다 → 같다 — a one-letter typo that's easy to miss
겉다 isn't a word — it's a typo for 같다 ("seems like / is like"), one of the most frequently used words in Korean diary writing. Because 같다 shows up at the end of so many sentences, a single mistyped letter here is worth double-checking every time.

Try It Yourself
Write 3-5 sentences describing today's weather, or quote something you heard on the news or from a friend. Pay attention to:
- Quotations: does your quoted sentence need
라는instead of는? - Connectors: are you describing a general pattern (
보면) or a result you've already experienced (보니)? - Compound verbs: is there a more natural two-part verb, like
흘러 들어오다, for what you're describing?
