Korean Writing Correction: The Benefits of Swimming

Fix 저항하다 vs 맞서다 (the verb for resisting a physical force vs. an authority), plus loanword spelling and distributive-particle polish points.

Some diary entries start as a small complaint and turn into research. Today's writer had shoulder stiffness, wondered if swimming might help, and ended up writing out exactly why it works — water pressure, buoyancy, muscle groups you don't normally use. It's a short, useful entry, and it's a good one for a single grammar habit that shows up twice: reaching for the wrong verb when describing a physical force acting on the body.

The Original Entry

Corrections

Correction 1: 저항해서 → 맞서서

Written: 물의 흐름에 저항해서 서 있는 것 만 으로도 Correct: 물의 흐름에 맞서서 서 있는 것 만 으로도

Korean has two common words for "resist," and they split along a line that's easy to miss: what kind of thing you're resisting.

저항하다 is resistance against control, authority, or oppression — it's the word in 저항 운동 (resistance movement) and 독재에 저항하다 (to resist a dictatorship). It carries a political or social weight, even when used loosely. Water flowing past your legs in a pool isn't exerting control over you; it's just a physical force.

맞서다 means "to stand facing something, to hold your ground against it" — and it's the natural verb for a direct physical force: wind, current, an opponent in front of you. 물의 흐름에 맞서서 서 있다 reads as exactly what's happening — standing your ground against the water's push — without importing the political undertone of 저항하다.

Try it in your diary:

  • 바람에 맞서서 걸었다. (I walked against the wind.) — a physical force, so 맞서다
  • 부당한 규칙에 저항했다. (I resisted the unfair rule.) — an authority/system, so 저항하다
  • 파도에 맞서서 버텼다. (I held my ground against the waves.)

A few more polish points

  • 부하가 걸린다 → 부하를 건다: 걸리다 is the passive form — it's for things that happen to you, often unintentionally, like 감기에 걸리다 (to catch a cold) or 시간이 걸리다 (time gets taken up). But here, water pressure is actively applying load to the body — an identifiable force doing something, not a vague thing happening to you. The active form 부하를 건다 ("[the pressure] applies load") matches that better than the passive 부하가 걸린다.
  • 15분을 두번 → 15분씩 두 번: When you're describing a repeated unit — "15 minutes, twice" — Korean needs the distributive particle to mark that each repetition is 15 minutes: 15분씩 두 번 ("15 minutes each, twice"). Drop 씩 and 15분을 두 번 reads like two unconnected numbers rather than "twice, 15 minutes each time."
  • 릴랙스 → 릴렉스: Another loanword spelling trap — "relax" sounds like it should transliterate to 릴랙스, but the standard Korean spelling is 릴렉스. The intuitive phonetic guess and the accepted spelling don't match, so this one is worth memorizing rather than sounding out.
  • 있는 것 → 있을 것: "계속할 수 있는 것 같다" describes an ongoing ability in a flat, present-tense way. Adding the prospective marker — 계속할 수 있을 것 같다 — signals that this is something expected to continue going forward, which is the nuance the writer actually wants when talking about staying with an exercise habit "even as I get older."

The pattern to remember

Before reaching for a "resist" verb in Korean, ask what's on the other side of the resistance:

  • Standing against a physical force (wind, water, an opponent) → 맞서다
  • Standing against control, rules, or an authority → 저항하다

Water pushing against your legs in a pool is the first kind — direct and physical — even though "resist" feels like the obvious English translation either way.
