Korean Writing Correction: How to Express Being Tired

Spacing rules, fixed expressions, and diary register — three corrections from a real Korean diary entry about exhaustion.

Feeling exhausted after a long day? Writing about it in Korean is great diary practice.

The Original Writing

A learner wrote this passage about a tiring day:

피곤한 날의 일기

오늘은 일이 많아서 피곤했습니다. 퇴근 후 집에 돌아왔을 때 너무 지쳐있었어요. 저녁도 못 먹고 바로 잠에 들었어요. 몸이 피곤할 때 한국어로 어떻게 표현하면 좋을지 더 알고 싶습니다.

Three things to fix.

The Three Corrections

1. 지쳐있었어요 → 지쳐 있었어요

Korean requires a space between a verb stem and 있다 when used as a resultant state.

  • ✗ 너무 지쳐있었어요
  • ✅ 너무 지쳐 있었어요
  • ✅ 너무 지쳤어요 (more natural in diary Korean)

Diary tip: 지쳤다 describes the moment of becoming exhausted. Both forms work in a diary.

2. 잠에 들었어요 → 잠이 들었어요

The fixed expression "to fall asleep" in Korean is 잠이 들다 — subject particle 이 attaches to 잠.

  • ✗ 바로 잠에 들었어요
  • ✅ 바로 잠이 들었어요

Diary tip: Other 잠 expressions: 잠을 못 잤다 (could not sleep), 잠에서 깼다 (woke up), 꿈을 꿨다 (had a dream).

3. Diary Register

The closing sentence is grammatically fine but too formal for a personal diary.

  • Original: 몸이 피곤할 때 한국어로 어떻게 표현하면 좋을지 더 알고 싶습니다.
  • ✅ Natural: 피곤함을 더 다양하게 표현하고 싶다.

Shorter, direct, and sounds like something you would actually write for yourself.
