Korean Writing Correction: Video Job Interviews
Fix 찍히다 vs 비춰지다 (the verb for how you look on camera vs. the mechanical act of being photographed), plus particle and word-choice polish points.
Some diary entries are less about what happened and more about what the writer noticed. Today's entry is a reflection on video interviews — how COVID pushed hiring online, and what changes when a camera stands in for a room. It's a great one for a verb pair that trips up a lot of learners: two different ways to say something is "captured" by a camera, and only one of them fits when you're talking about how you look.
The Original Entry
Corrections
Correction 1: 찍히는 방법 → 잘 비춰지는 방법
Written: 카메라 앵글, 찍히는 방법, 통신환경 Correct: 카메라 앵글, 잘 비춰지는 방법, 통신환경
Korean has two passive verbs for "camera did something to you," and interview advice needs the one that's about impression, not mechanics.
찍히다 is the passive of 찍다, "to take a photo/video" — it describes the camera's action on you: the shutter clicks, the recording happens. It's a mechanical, momentary event, the same word you'd use for 사진이 찍혔다 ("the photo got taken").
비춰지다 is the passive of 비추다, "to shine light on, to reflect, to show" — it describes how you come across, the image that gets projected. When interview coaches talk about camera angle and lighting, they're not talking about the technical act of recording; they're talking about how you look to the person on the other end. That's an impression, not a mechanical capture, so 비춰지다 is the natural fit.
The same swap shows up again a few lines later:
Written: 얼굴의 일부만 화면에 들어가 있거나 하면 안 된다 Correct: 얼굴의 일부만 화면에 비춰지거나 하면 안 된다
화면에 들어가 있다 reads literally as "to be inside the screen" — a spatial description, as if the screen were a container. But a face on a video call isn't inside anything; it's reflected on the display, which is exactly what 비춰지다 describes.
Try it in your diary:
- 화면에 잘 비춰지도록 조명을 켰다. (I turned on a light so I'd show up well on screen.)
- 사진에 찍힌 모습이 마음에 안 들었다. (I didn't like how I looked in the photo that was taken.) — the mechanical act of the shot, so 찍히다
- 그의 얼굴에 걱정이 비춰졌다. (Worry showed on his face.) — an impression, not a photograph
A few more polish points
- 온라인로 / 코로나19으로 → 온라인으로 / 코로나19로: The 로/으로 particle splits on the last sound of the noun before it — a consonant-ending (patchim) noun needs 으로, a vowel-ending noun needs 로. This entry gets the rule backwards both times: 온라인 ends in the consonant ㄴ, so it needs 으로 (온라인으로), while 코로나19 ends in the vowel sound of "구" (구 in 십구, nineteen), so it needs 로 (코로나19로). Same rule, opposite mistakes — worth drilling until it's automatic.
- 새 졸업생 → 취업 준비생: 새 졸업생 ("new graduate") describes someone by their school status, but the sentence is about job-hunting behavior — attending online briefings, going through interview rounds. 취업 준비생 ("job seeker," literally "employment-preparing person") is the term that actually matches what the sentence describes, since not every job seeker is a recent graduate.
- 들뜬 → 이야기거리가 되었다는: 들뜨다 means "to be excited/giddy" — a feeling. But the sentence isn't describing how the writer felt; it's describing that the height difference became something people talked about after coworkers met in person. 이야기거리가 되다 ("to become a talking point") matches the actual content — an anecdote circulating, not an emotion.
- 비결 같은 것 있다 → 비결 같은 것이 있다: 있다 ("there is/exists") needs a subject particle on what precedes it. Drop 이 and the sentence reads as a fragment rather than a complete clause — a small omission, but one that's easy to catch on a re-read.
- 알굴 → 얼굴: A straightforward typo for "face" — the kind of slip that's invisible while typing quickly but stands out on review.
- 의외로 잘 알아채는 것 같아서 → 의외로 쉽게 알아채기 때문에: ~것 같아서 ("because it seems like...") hedges the claim as a guess. But interviewers reliably noticing a cheat sheet isn't a guess here — it's presented as the reason caution is needed. ~기 때문에 ("because...") states the reason directly, which matches the writer's actual confidence level better than a soft "seems like."
The pattern to remember
When something is captured by a camera, ask what you're actually describing:
- The mechanical act of recording (a shutter click, a video being taken) → 찍히다
- How you come across, the image being shown or reflected → 비춰지다
Interview advice about lighting and angles is always about the second one — even though "get caught by the camera" is the phrase that comes to mind first.
