Korean Writing Correction: Watches vs. Smartphones

Korean has a small group of words that look like descriptive adjectives but actually conjugate like action verbs — and 있다 ("to exist/have") and 않다 ("to not do/be") are the two you'll run into constantly. Get their present-tense form wrong and it's one of the most common tells of a non-native writer. Correction 1: 않은다면 → 않는다면

Written: 금지되어 있지 않은다면 — Correct: 금지하지 않는다면

Two things are happening in this sentence, and it's worth separating them.

First, the collocation: Korean doesn't say "사용하기가 금지되다" (usage is-prohibited) — it says "사용을 금지하다" (to prohibit the use), with a person or rule as the one doing the prohibiting. So the sentence needs to switch from the passive 금지되다 to the active 금지하다.

Second — and this is the real trap — 않다 looks like a descriptive word (it means "isn't/doesn't"), so learners instinctively conjugate it like an adjective, adding -은 the way you would for 예쁜 (pretty) or 작은 (small). But 않다 grammatically behaves like an action verb (동사), and action verbs take -는다 in the plain present tense, not -은다. So "않다" becomes "않는다," never "않은다."

업무중에 스마트폰 사용을 금지하지 않는다면, 스마트폰으로 시간을 확인할 수 있기 때문에 손목시계 사용과 스마트폰 보급이 반비례하기 마련이다. If smartphone use isn't banned at work, people can check the time on their phone, so it makes sense that wristwatch use and smartphone adoption would be inversely related.

(Notice 반비례하는 법니다 was also cleaned up to the much more natural 반비례하기 마련이다 — "-기 마련이다" is the idiomatic way to say "it's bound to be the case that...")

Correction 2: 있지 않은 → 있지 않는

Written: 뭔가를 끼고 있지 않은 사람 — Correct: 뭔가를 하고 있지 않는 사람

Same trap, same fix. 있다 ("to exist/be in a state") also conjugates like an action verb, not a descriptive one — its modifier form is always 있는, never 있은. So "있지 않다" (to not be in a state of...) becomes 있지 않는 when it modifies a following noun, not 있지 않은.

There's also a smaller word-choice fix here: 끼다 (to wear/insert, used for rings and watches specifically) was swapped for the more general 하다, since the sentence is now talking about wearables in general, not just watches.

이번에는 팔에 뭔가를 하고 있지 않는 사람이 줄어가는 시대가 온 것이다. This time, the era has arrived where fewer and fewer people have nothing on their wrist at all.

The pattern to remember

있다 and 않다 are two of the few Korean words that mean something static ("exist," "not do") but conjugate like action verbs, not adjectives:
